About Us

OUR STORY

Handmade Pride is about making and sharing art which focuses and celebrates the diversity and pride in the LGBTIQA+ community. Born in 2018 as The Early Bird Collective, the name of the game has always been experimentation and making unique and colourful artwork.

After three years of creation, it was time to change the focus of the art, and thus The Early Bird Collective underwent a transformation and was reborn in late 2021 as Handmade Pride.

As a proud member of the LGBTIQA+ community, I know how important it is to find things that represent you as a person. This is part of what drives me to create unique pieces that reflect all different areas of our community. I would love to have the creations of Handmade Pride be part of the celebration of living one’s truth

The focus of Handmade Pride is creating artwork which instils a sense of pride in people, and which also looks great on the wall.

Handmade Pride is based in Perth (Boorloo), Western Australia (on Whadjuk Noongar Country).

MEET VANESSA

Hi! I’m Vanessa, my pronouns are she/her, and I am the artist and creator behind Handmade Pride.

Ever since I was little, I have had a passion and interest in colour, creation, and getting my hands dirty (literally). If I wasn’t playing in the mud or climbing trees, I was making things from items found in the garden and trying to sell them to my family (my most famous item was a mini toothbrush made from weeds).

After years of ignoring my creative side, I was introduced to fluid art, and a hobby quickly turned into an obsession. The messy creation process, the unpredictability of the paints, and the ability to endlessly experiment excites me to this day.

Being able to create and play has been an incredible outlet for stress and an important part in managing my mental health. I think that as an adult we need to incorporate more time in our lives for play, and for me this is the perfect way to do so.

So here’s to creativity, playing, getting dirty, and celebrating the pride within.

THE ARTWORK

Unpredictable. Messy. Random. Unique. Beautiful.

These are just some of the words people have used to describe fluid artwork. At Handmade Pride, acrylic paints, alcohol inks and resin are just some of the mediums used to create unique artwork using fluid art techniques.

Handmade Pride’s signature artwork piece is the humble clock, made from old vinyl records which were destined for landfill. The artwork on the clocks is created using a fluid art technique called acrylic pouring, meaning the result is random and unique. The artwork is then coated with a coat of clear resin, before a silent mechanism is attached, and the clock is ready to hang.

Each piece of artwork is handmade, unique, and is made to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. When you buy from Handmade Pride, you get a small piece of pride in every piece.

Thank you for supporting small business and the rainbow community.
